In memory of
Claudio
Macchiavelli
1942 — 2026
Dog enthusiast, field-trial man, hunter and President of ENCI. A lifetime devoted to the English Pointer and to the Scuderia della Cervara.
The Pointer was not simply a passion.
It was a lifelong vocation.
For more than half a century Claudio Macchiavelli was part of Italian cynology as a dog man, field-trial enthusiast, hunter and friend. His name is inseparably linked to the Della Cervara affix and to the Scuderia della Cervara, which became one of the leading names in the European Pointer world.
The Scuderia della Cervara was never a commercial activity. For Claudio it was a genuine passion, lived with rigour, knowledge, dedication and major personal commitment. In the 1990s he also became President of ENCI, bringing his experience from the field to the head of the national canine institution.

A name beyond Italy
One of Europe’s great English Pointer kennels.
The Scuderia della Cervara was one of the largest and most prestigious English Pointer kennels in Europe. Its importance was not measured only by results, but by the continuity of a recognisable breeding programme that expressed itself for decades in working trials, Grande Cerca and the breed’s most important events.
Behind every generation was Claudio’s eye: choosing matings, assessing young dogs, daily work and constant dialogue with handlers and dog men. The Scuderia della Cervara was more than a name. It was a vision.

The roots
The Scuderia della Cervara grew around a precise idea of the working Pointer: natural qualities, ground coverage, breed style and reliability in hunting and trials.

Cleo della Cervara
Born on 20 March 2008, Cleo became one of the most important Pointers in the history of the Scuderia. European female Grande Cerca Champion in 2011, member of the winning Italian European Cup team in 2012, and still competing at the highest level in 2014–2015.
DetailsPointer Club Champions
Official records include Ziro della Cervara among the 2011 Pointer Club Champions.
New generations
The continuity of the breeding programme continued through new generations of Pointers, handlers and major European field-trial events.
The final recognition
At Campo Felice, the Pointer Club d’Italia awarded first place in the 2026 Breeders’ Trophy to Della Cervara — Claudio Macchiavelli.
A lasting mark on Italian cynology
Claudio Macchiavelli and the modernisation of ENCI
During Claudio Macchiavelli’s presidency, ENCI went through an important phase of institutional consolidation and modernisation.
Claudio devoted particular effort to the recognition and regulation of canine breeding activity, working for a clearer legal framework suited to its reality. This path contributed to Law no. 349 of 1993 on canine breeding, an important result for breeders of all dog breeds throughout Italy.
The aim was to give greater dignity, legal certainty and protection to those who bred and selected dogs, distinguishing amateur activity from professional activity and reducing burdens on small breeders.
In the same years ENCI strengthened its relationship with the Ministry of Agriculture and, in 1996, the regulations for the pedigree register of purebred dogs managed by ENCI were approved.
Under Claudio’s presidency ENCI also invested in computerisation, strengthened its administrative structure and, above all, purchased the new headquarters in Viale Corsica in Milan, still the national headquarters today.
The Viale Corsica headquarters remains perhaps the most visible sign of that period: more than thirty years later it is still the home of Italian cynology.
The heart of the Scuderia
The English Pointer.
Elegance, speed, scent, initiative and a point that becomes style.
The breed at the centre of the Scuderia della Cervara has always been the English Pointer. For Claudio, results were not enough: what mattered was how a dog covered the ground, searched, showed character and came onto point.
The Scuderia selected complete dogs with strong natural qualities, combining breed style, balance, courage and performance. This vision gave continuity to the Della Cervara generations and took its Pointers to trials throughout Italy and Europe.

Style
Movement and expression on the ground were essential parts of a dog’s value.
Search
Ground coverage, initiative and breadth without losing contact or quality.
Point
The point as a synthesis of instinct, balance, intensity and breed type.
Selection
Generations built through continuity, knowledge of bloodlines and attention to natural qualities.
Names that carried the Scuderia onto the trial grounds.
Dogs are ordered by date of birth, from oldest to youngest. Dogs whose birth date is not yet documented are listed at the end.
Trialler Champions
For Claudio, the title of Trialler Champion was one of the clearest confirmations of breeding quality: not a single win, but a Pointer able to perform consistently at the highest level of Grande Cerca for natural qualities, style, initiative and effectiveness.
For British pointing breeds, the title requires two CAC awards in Grande Cerca trials — at most one in a Young Dogs trial — plus at least a Very Good at a breed Special Show or Club Gathering.
Jaga di Veronello
One of the great females from the early years of the Scuderia. In 1983, handled by Gino Botto, she is remembered for winning the European Cup.

The hunting reserve,
friends and trials.
The Cantalupo Ligure hunting reserve was a place close to Claudio’s heart: a setting for trials, days with the dogs, friendships and memories that belong to the history of the Scuderia.
The long table in the hunting house.
Wednesday was a special day. Especially during the hunting season, Claudio loved gathering friends, dog enthusiasts and fellow sportsmen at the hunting house.
Lunch around the long table was the heart of the day: field stories, discussions about dogs, memories of trials and hunts, old and new friendships. More than an appointment, it became a tradition of the Scuderia della Cervara and the Cantalupo Ligure reserve.

Friendship
Memories
Friends, people and faces of the Scuderia,
from the field to the dogs and the table at Cantalupo.
Some friendships held a special place in Claudio’s life, alongside the many people who became part of the history of the Scuderia della Cervara. They were relationships built over decades of trials, hunting, travel, meals, discussions about dogs and shared days. Above all, the friendship with Roberto Pedrazzetti was the deepest.
His closest friend
Roberto Pedrazzetti
Roberto Pedrazzetti was Claudio’s closest friend. A pharmacist and dog man from Bellinzona, a mountain man, international judge and historic figure in European cynology, he shared much more than a passion with Claudio: he shared an important part of his life.
Trials, dogs, mountains, Cantalupo, endless discussions and convivial moments were the natural setting of a deep and lasting friendship. In the dog world Roberto was affectionately known as “il Super”; he served as President of the Swiss Setter-Pointer Club, President of the International Setter Club and as an international judge.
His name remained linked to Cantalupo. After his death, the Trofeo Roberto Pedrazzetti was held on those grounds, almost bringing him back once more to a place he had shared with Claudio.
For Claudio, however, before titles and cynology came Roberto: his dearest friend, a relationship that went far beyond dogs and trials.
A great friend of the Scuderia
Angelo Mocchi
Angelo Mocchi was an important friend of Claudio and a significant presence in the world of the Scuderia della Cervara. A passionate Pointer man, he shared field days, trials, dogs and genuine conviviality with Claudio.
Their friendship was also intertwined through Pointers and their respective experiences. Angelo died before Claudio, but his memory lives on in photographs, dogs and the many days they spent together.

A memory still growing
Friends, testimonies, photographs
The memorial of the Scuderia della Cervara will continue to grow with photographs, testimonies and memories of the people who were part of Claudio Macchiavelli’s life. Friendship was as essential to his story as dogs and the land.
In 2026 the Scuderia della Cervara closes.
Its history does not.
After Claudio Macchiavelli’s death, the family chose to close the Scuderia della Cervara.
It is a decision made out of respect for what Claudio built. A kennel that reached that level lived through his experience, his eye, his knowledge of bloodlines and his personal presence. Without him, it could not have been maintained at the same level, with the same soul and vision.
The name will therefore not be carried on as a merely formal continuation. It remains intact in its history, in the Pointers it produced, in the bloodlines that continue and in the memory of those who knew Claudio.
